YCIS primary students master core international curriculum by connecting classroom questions to real-world problems. Our positive, nurturing, and compassionate environment empowers students and teaches integrity, honesty, and respect.
Our primary students become more independent and gain the perspective that authentic learning is more than memorising texts and formulae. Working through actual scenarios and issues and taking a hands-on approach in their everyday studies means, they won’t just know the facts, but they will also seek to understand and internalise them.
Our internationally focused YCIS Curriculum provides a strong academic and holistic education: from cross-cultural experiences to an emphasis on learning the Chinese language and culture to enriching music, arts, and sports activities. Our campus is truly a place where learning is celebrated. Our students are encouraged to become Individuals with character and integrity, hold strong, positive values, know themselves, and aspire to be global citizens committed to making a difference in our world.
YCIS's International Primary School curriculum is based on the framework of the Yew Chung Curriculum” – a bilingual, international curriculum written by experts from the Curriculum and Professional Development Division.
The YCIS Beijing Primary School also has two fully qualified teachers in all classrooms. One Western teacher and one Chinese teacher create and foster a Chinese and English bilingual learning environment. Our Co-Teachers share equal authority and responsibility in the classroom. They plan and implement lessons accordingly to facilitate students’ learning in a multicultural environment.
At our school, two Co-Principals, one Western and one Chinese, partner to provide academic leadership and oversee the implementation of Primary education at YCIS Beijing. Their engagement in the community, leadership, and multicultural collaboration helps to create a truly international experience for our students.
Our international Primary school teaches our elementary-aged children a range of different subjects, including: both English and Chinese languages, Mathematics, History, Geography, Science, Physical Education, Music, Art, Design & Technology, and Information and Communication Technology. Students in Primary also have the opportunity to participate in our robust Co-Curricular programme to further develop their skills in a wide range of subjects.
At Yew Chung International School of Beijing, our Primary School campus is a place of energy and life. Students are enthusiastic towards learning and are offered a wealth of opportunities. Our YCIS curriculum provides a robust and all-rounded academic education: from cross-cultural experiences and an international education that emphasises learning Chinese culture, to expansive music, arts and sports activities, to programmes designed to help develop a moral compass.
Every teacher in Years 1 and 2 ensures that each child is treated with the utmost care and respect. We provide a curriculum that is both challenging and stimulating, ensuring that children enjoy their learning and feel a part of an ever-growing educational environment.
Through Character Education, the children acquire the skills of becoming global citizens and are encouraged to take more ownership of their learning. Our year levels provide auditory, visual and practical programmes, ensuring every learner is catered to.
Our learning and teaching environment gives students a sense of well-being and confidence in communicating in two languages. Students are provided with many resources, creating a stimulating atmosphere where exploration and imagination are greatly encouraged.
Our bilingual teaching and learning programme in early Primary helps students develop the skills they need in English and Chinese to become proficient speakers. Students immerse themselves in both languages in each classroom as Western and Chinese Co-Teachers instruct and provide feedback.
Students are supported throughout the programme by differentiated classes. YCIS Beijing provides services to students who qualify for our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme and level-based Chinese courses. We aim to shape our students to be confident risk-takers.
As our students move forward from our own ECE community or other external childhood centres, we align ourselves with the importance of play-based learning. The units in our Topic curriculum lend themselves extensively to practical, hands-on activities, where exploring, designing and making are all part of our students’ development process.
A great opportunity for play-based learning also presents itself during our study of narratives, which are made more accessible and enjoyable through numerous role-play activities. In Year 1, our students have three dedicated Gross Motor Skills exercise per week, where physical development is supported by age-appropriate equipment, whilst giving autonomy to our students. To further enhance development and learning through play, we’ve created an "Exploration & Discovery" unit on the Year 1 floor!
Teams from Years 1 and 2 collaborate on design and implement lessons that are engaging and interactive yet promote critical thinking. We draw on students' interests to create units of study that follow the standards of the Yew Chung Curriculum.
It is essential that students enjoy learning while exploring and retaining necessary foundational skills. Co-Teaching allows us to use flexible grouping within the class and across year levels. This allows us time to pull students to work in small groups on individual skills that need to be mastered or enriched. We also provide choices and a differentiated environment where students can feel safe and valued.
YCIS Beijing teachers are always seeking new and creative ways to enhance student engagement and achievement. Through collaboration, our year groups can cater for depth and breadth of learning needed by our students.
The school provides teachers with opportunities to regularly discuss student performance and the development of lessons, and reflect upon best practices. During these times, teachers consider the needs and interests of our students and the needs of their families. We enjoy inviting parents to get involved, whether as guest speakers, to read a book, or to organise an activity. Enhancing education through collaboration is our main focus.
The Arts (visual arts, classroom music and violin) are a core component of the YCIS Beijing education programme and help develop skills that are relevant to all students. Through exploring design principles, the elements of art, and by playing, singing, composing, performing, listening and responding to art and music, students can create, learn and solve problems.
The Arts programme’s activities support academic achievement through stimulation of the brain, and in turn help in the development of language and mathematics. Through songs, students learn to distinguish between similar speech sounds, which in turn helps with languages. Learning rhythms, decoding notes and symbols, and looking at musical patterns help students to develop mathematical skills.
The Violin programme is undertaken by all students in Years 1 and 2, providing an opportunity to develop core musicianship skills. Students develop a sense of pitch, rhythm, tempo, and the ability to play and perform with others. Through learning the violin, the foundation is set for studying any musical instrument. These programmes promote self-esteem, motivation, creativity, aesthetic awareness, emotional expression, social harmony, an appreciation of diversity and cultural exposure.
Here at YCIS Beijing, we strive to ensure Physical Education is taught to an excellent standard, with its enjoyment at the heart of our ethos. Physical Education provides an understanding of health through play, competitive sports, high-quality curriculum provision, and out-of-hours learning.
Physical education adopts a holistic approach and provides children with the fundamental and unique opportunity to develop physically, psychologically, emotionally and socially through their participation in a range of physical activities. At YCIS Beijing, we adopt a positive and proactive approach to physical activity and healthy living across the school, which is reinforced to encourage and promote a long-lasting relationship with sport and physical education.
Primary students attend PE lessons each week, with many Upper Primary students participating in various inter-school competitions, including football, badminton, handball and swimming.
All year levels participate in field trips in and around Beijing every year. The trips will be tied to what students are covering or working on in class. Trip destinations include the Green Cow Organic Farm, Prince Gong's Mansion, Beijing Puppet Theatre, Beijing Zoo, Capital Museum, Wali Park, Science Museum and Beijing Butterfly Farm.
