Homework Buddies Learn the Value of a Helping Hand

Sometimes parents can find it difficult to encourage their children to complete their homework, struggling to find the time, or just being unsure of how to help. To help relieve some of that pressure, a group of compassionate Secondary students at YCIS Beijing volunteer their afternoons to become “homework buddies” for our younger learners. This unique programme has had a visibly positive impact on everyone involved.

Primary students receive personalised help with their homework, all the while building positive relationships, gaining confidence and learning the value of a job well done. Additionally, thanks to the varied nationalities of the Secondary volunteers, multilingual support is offered in English, Korean and Chinese, further increasing the recipients’ language abilities.

For our Secondary volunteers, developing a deeper sense of responsibility and commitment to their community not only builds their confidence and self-esteem, but also provides them with the opportunity to reflect on their own studies. Additionally, Years 10 and 11 students are able to use their contribution of time to count as a service activity in their YCIS challenge, while Years 12 and 13 students can use this activity to count towards their CAS requirements.

While it may seem like a simple act of helping a fellow student with their homework, it perfectly demonstrates the YCIS Beijing commitment to fostering a caring community and shows the power of promoting character education in students.
